Water and electricity can be a shocking combination in an aquarium system.

I know this all too well from experience!  One of the ways to help prevent this situation is to install a GFCI (Ground Fault Current Interrupt) outlet for your aquarium system. This is an outlet with a built in breaker and reset button that are prevalent in bathrooms and kitchens.

If there is not already one installed in the wall for your aquarium, you can purchase one that plugs directly into a regular wall outlet.  You can then plug an outlet strip into the GFCI outlet.

This will help to cut down on the risk of electric shock in the event of a light strip falling into the water, pump electrical short and salt creep buildup into electrical components.
